RACE 1 – 12:40PM AEDT
RACE 2 – 1:15PM AEDT
There are plenty of winning chances in what is one of the most open races of the afternoon. He’s A Moral has been racing better than his recent record suggests and this could be the right race for him. He ran impressive closing sectionals in his two recent starts at The Valley and he didn’t have a great deal of luck last start at Seymour. His racing style always means that he needs luck in running, but he is a talented horse on his day and it definitely wouldn’t surprise to see him flying over the top of his rivals late.
Best Bet – He’s A Moral Ew $8
RACE 3 – 1:50PM AEDT
Havasay will start this race as a clear favourite following his third place finishes in both the Bribie Handicap and the Falvelon Quality, but I am keen to take him on at his current price as he will need plenty of luck in running from the wide barrier draw.
The horse that appeals at a big price is Secret Trail. She had no luck in running last start at Royal Randwick and she should be close to peak fitness third-up. I like the fact that Team Snowden have given her a barrier trial between starts – which she won in impressive fashion – and her best form is good enough to win this race. She will need a peach of a ride from Regan Bayliss, but at the current price I am willing to take that gamble
Best Bet – Secret Trail – something the win, triple the place
RACE 4 – 2:25PM AEDT
The market has this as a race in two between Sedanzer and Payroll and they do look to have a clear edge over their rivals. Sedanzer may have had her winning streak by Pecans in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford, but she was far from disgraced and her form this campaign has been outstanding. The issue for Sedanzer is that she is jumping from 1600 metres straight-up to 2200 metres and she is untested at this distance.
Running out the trip will not be an issue for Payroll and her form this campaign has been just as strong. She finished second behind the talented Savapinski in the Matriarch Stakes during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and she has since won both the Eclipse Stakes and the Lord Stakes. That form is good enough to win this race and she does have the benefit of Damien Oliver in the saddle.
Best Bet – Payroll Scratched Feltre EW $15
RACE 6 – 3:35PM AEDT
The Magic Millions Cup field is packed full of quality and you can make a case for a number of the runners in this field. I have a great deal of respect for the likes of Care To Think, Crack Me Up and Arbeitsam, but they do all look to have found their right price.
Darren Weir has a strong hand in the Magic Millions Cup and Lucky Hussler and Ozi Choice both appeal at their current price. Lucky Hussler is not as consistent as he once was, but on his best form he is clearly the class horse in this field and we saw that he is still capable of that when he won the Crystal Mile in impressive fashion during the spring. He will need luck in running from the wide draw, but I can’t let a horse of his quality go around at that price.
Ozi Choice is a horse that has improved remarkably in the past 12 months and he goes into this race on the back of three dominant wins. This is easily the toughest test of his racing career to date, but he makes his own luck right on the speed and still has plenty of upside. The $13 currently available is well and truly over the odds.
Best Bet – Ozi Choice Something the win triple the place $14
RACE 7 – 4:15PM AEDT
Pierata is a clear favourite in the Magic Millions Guineas betting market and there is no doubt that he is the horse to beat in the $2 million race. He was nothing short of outstanding in the Vo Rogue Plate and a repeat of that effort would make him too strong for this field, but there is no doubt that barrier one is far from ideal. He is going to need luck in running at some stage of the race and that does make it tough to get him as short as his current price.
I would be surprised if Blake Shinn didn’t press forward on Whypeeo and if he does that, the I Am Invincible gelding has the chance to steal this contest. He beat Pierata when he led in the Gold Edition Plate and he was ridden against his pattern when he failed to fire in the Vo Rogue Plate. A return to his usual racing style will give him every possible chance to pull-off an upset win at very juicy odds.
Best Bet – Whypeeo Something the win triple the place $15
RACE 8 – 4:55PM AEDT
This is a fascinating edition of the Magic Millions Classic and one of the strongest fields that has ever been assembled for the race. The market has focused in on Jonker, Ef Troop and Sunlight, but there is plenty of depth to this race.
Jonker is a horse that has done nothing wrong during his racing career to date. The time that he ran to win the Wyong Magic Millions was not particularly impressive and there is no doubt that some of his rivals failed to fire in that race. He is still a genuine winning chance and he has the advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle. But more importantly he has drawn to get the run of the race, the Coast can be a very leader bias track and the tight home turn can make it tough for the 2 horses that can be him both drawn the car park.
Ef Troop has shown blistering early speed in his two race starts to date and he is a horse with an enormous amount of upside. He is a horse that is in a similar mould to last year’s winner Houtzen and the wide barrier draw should prove to be an advantage. The son of Spirit Of Boom has the early speed required to cross this field and take up the running and he is capable of producing some brutal mid-race sectionals.
Sunlight was beaten on debut in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, but she has since produced two outstanding performances to win on the Gold Coast. The way that she put away her rivals last start was most impressive and she does look to be a more tractable horse than Ef Troop. The money has come for her early.
The x-factor in the race could be Bondi. He failed to fire when he was beaten by Jonker in the Wyong Magic Millions, but his debut effort in the Breeders’ Stakes was excellent. If he can return to the level that he produced on debut he is right in this race and it is no secret that Team Snowden have a simply outstanding record in these big two-year-old races.
Best Bet – Jonker $6
RACE 9 – 5:40PM AEDT
The Magic Millions Sprint is always an excellent race and the 2-18 edition – now known as the Magic Millions Snippets – is no exception. Viddora has been nothing short of outstanding this campaign and she heads to Queensland after winning the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth. There is no doubt that she is the class horse in this field and if brings her best form to the races she will be very tough to beat, but she has been up for a long time and she has done plenty of travelling.
Egyptian Symbol returned to the races with an excellent victory in the Starlight Stakes and there is no horse in this field – not even Viddora – that is capable of matching her turn-of-foot. I like the fact that Bjorn Baker has freshened her up since her Starlight Stakes win and she has won two barrier trials. She can finish over the top of her rivals and there is genuine value at her current price of $6.50.
Best Bet – Egyptian Symbol $5
