MELBOURNE CUP DAY BEST BET & QUADDIE SELECTIONS

THE RACE THAT STOPS A NATION

The 154th running of the race that stops a nation will take on a distinctly international feel as an equal record field of foreign horses compete for the $6.2 million Cup and a place in sporting history.

A crowd of more than 100,000 is expected to pack Flemington for the race with millions more around the globe tuning in to watch the sporting showcase.

TRACK CONDITION – Flemington racecourse manager Mick Goodie moved the rail out to the two metre position following last Saturday’s Victoria Derby day when the inside section of the surface proved superior ground.

Racing Victoria issued a statement saying, “The grass has been cut on Monday to 6 inches across the entire track. It raced at approximately 7.5 inches across the entire track on Saturday having been cut to 5.5 inches last Tuesday.”

With the rail in the two metre position, Goodie advised the inside 10-metres of the track in the home straight is a good (4) surface, while the area between 10 to 14 metres is “between a good (4) and soft (5)” while the section of the home straight, 14 metres to the outside rail is rated a soft (5).

The overall track rating is a good (4).

Trackwalker Sam Hyland tweeted, “Track walks clean, cover from around the circle, softer ground 10-14 out where it had been aerated.”

The overall penetrometer track reading issued on Tuesday morning was 4.88. The inside section of the home straight produced a penetrometer reading of 4.86 while the outside of the track returned a 4.88 reading.

BEST BETS

BEST BET – WAWAIL (Flemington – Race 10 No 4): The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable are flying and this four-year-old mare has found the right race third-up from a spell and should be winning. Never got a shot at them when resuming in Group III grade behind Politeness, the winner of Saturday’s Myer Classic, then was left a sitting shot when Politeness nosed her out in the Northwood Plume. Has the statistics at Flemington (3:2-0-1), has the gun barrier and gets out to her favoured trip of 1400m (3:2-0-1). Opened at around the $5 mark but punters wasted no time so with $4 still on offer is worth getting set now before the excitement and distractions of a busy Melbourne Cup day kick-in.
